Will Medicaid Cover Rehab

Medicaid often covers rehab, also known as substance use disorder treatment, alcohol addiction treatment, substance abuse treatment, or addiction treatment services. Treatment options can vary, from inpatient treatment and residential treatment to partial hospitalization (PHP) to intensive outpatient programs (IOP) or fully outpatient treatment. However, not all treatment facilities accept Medicaid health insurance, so it is important to verify Medicaid covers the facility before starting treatment. Even with Medicaid benefits, there still may be a copay or out-of-pocket cost, so it is again important to verify Medicaid coverage prior to treatment. Medicaid coverage, however, can often be better than private insurance plans like Aetna or Cigna. Many plans, including Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans are required to cover alcohol rehab and drug rehab, but often have deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.

Many types of evidence-based treatment are used in treatment centers. Medication-assisted treatment uses medications like Methadone to treat opioid addictions. Behavioral therapy is used in all levels of treatment, with group therapy often being utilized in higher levels of care. Inpatient rehab often offers detoxification treatment, or “detox”. Some treatment centers treat co-occurring disorders, which are other behavioral health or mental health conditions like PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

With Medicaid insurance coverage, addiction recovery is possible. If you or a loved one are seeking treatment programs for rehabilitation, it is important to find a recovery center that meets your eligibility requirements and is in-network with your Medicaid health insurance program.
